In one of his first major appearances since winning the coveted prize, Gore praised Chicago’s role in paving the way for environmentally friendly practices in major cities. He cited the Chicago Climate Exchange and rooftop gardens as examples.

“Resist short-term gratification. This is being thrown at us from every direction,” he said during his Wednesday address to the Economic Club of Chicago at the Hyatt Regency. He used the speech as an opportunity to send a message to the Chicago business community.

ComEd in Chicago Pushes For 8 Percent Hike; Would Be Second in 2007

CHICAGO – ComEd announced on Wednesday that it plans to increase customer rates by nearly 8 percent to help fund a lagging infrastructure and to adjust for fast-growing collar counties. According to estimates, this could raise monthly bills $6 for every $75 in charges.

ComEd is asking for $361 million from the Illinois Commerce Commission to cover distribution charges. This would be the second fare hike imposed in 2007 as utility consumer bills jumped by at least 24 percent in Jan. 2007.

Linney, who said she had never been to the Chicago International Film Festival before, was proactive about looking right into press cameras even without them having to prompt her. Hence, this reporter shot her head on below.

CTA President Ron Huberman Writes New Letter to Chicago Commuters

As Chicagoans know all too well, the battle between the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and the state wages on. On Oct. 12, I received the following letter from CTA President Ron Huberman:

Dear CTA customer,

I unveiled [on Oct. 12] the CTA’s proposed 2008 budget that lays out a series of painful service cuts, fare increases and layoffs that will happen on Jan. 6, 2008.

These actions are required to meet our legal obligation to submit a balanced budget and are in addition to those service cuts and fare increases that will take effect on Nov. 4.

All of us at the CTA understand that these service cuts and fare increases will cause you a tremendous hardship. We know you will face fewer travel options, less frequent service and more crowded buses and trains.

As with the photo from the John Cusack red carpet on Oct. 12, Chicago photographer Joe Arce again captured the bull’s-eye Hopkins shot and has granted me permission to publish it.

Hopkins is also the star of the film along with Christian Slater. Though the scene lacked security and he only interviewed with press for about two minutes, the question of how he felt about Chicago did register.

Hopkins responded: “It’s a beautiful city. It’s the best-kept secret in America.”
