Chicago Public Schools Spends $7 Million on Social Networking

Open Text's logoCHICAGO – FirstClass software from Lincolnshire, Ill.-based Open Text will go live on Oct. 31 across the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) system. The software is designed to link teachers and students via e-mail, social networking and online tools.

Open Text will oversee the implementation of the software on the CPS database. The school board budget reported the cost for the technology at $7 million.

FirstClass is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that’s designed to ease the burden of technology professionals within schools. Chicago students will receive access to the service on a “rolling basis” throughout the school year.

The program has been used in certain CPS schools for nine months. A technology coordinator and computer teacher at Agustin Lara School in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood has some concerns with its rollout.

“I am waiting to see all the bumps and cracks,” said Lauren Villwock, 23, in an interview with MidwestBusiness.com. The software will go live to approximately 600 schools in the district.

Radio Show Sound of Young America Goes Public in Chicago on Oct. 31

CHICAGO – The Sound of Young America – a public radio show syndicated through Public Radio International and a Time Magazine “Pick of the Podcasts” in 2006 – will be hosting a live Chicago show and taping on Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. at the Second City e.t.c. stage.

Sound of Young America
The show is free. Hosted by Jesse Thorn (“America’s radio sweetheart”), the program will feature an interview with legendary music engineer Steve Albini.

Ablini is best known for working with artists such as The Stooges, Nirvana, Bush, Screeching Weasel, Superchunk and the Pixies along with being the frontman for the band Shellac.

Always controversial, Albini has long been a pundit of indie and mainstream music. Chicago comic favorites Hannibal Buress, Team Submarine, Schadenfreude and Second City comics will also perform that evening.

Comedians comprise about a third of the show. The balance features the full arts and entertainment spectrum including authors, TV personalities, musicians and bands. Thorn started the show when he was in college.

He has interviewed personalities including Stephen Colbert, Art Spiegelman and Ira Glass. Something of comedian himself, Thorn is committed to promoting independent and “alternative” comedy.

City of Chicago’s Casino Cash Wouldn’t Be Big Jackpot, But Could Help CTA

This just in from ChicagoBusiness.com:

Mayor Richard M. Daley’s dream of a city-owned casino won’t be a financial jackpot for Chicago.

Much of the debate around the current proposal has focused on the $1 billion in annual revenue a downtown casino is projected to generate. In reality, the city’s take after paying state taxes, operating costs and debt service would be only about $150 million.

That’s not enough to fully bail out the cash-strapped city government, which this year is asking for $300 million in new taxes and fees to close budget holes.

In ‘Gone Baby Gone’ Directorial Debut, Ben Affleck Matures Into Polished Auteur

HollywoodChicago.com Oscarman rating: 4.5/5CHICAGO – It wasn’t that long ago when Ben Affleck was an unknown. Fortune eventually smiled upon him and along came quality performances in independents and an Academy Award for screenwriting.

Then came “Armageddon,” “Pearl Harbor” and a series of nauseating tabloid stories involving something called “Bennifer”. Affleck’s public image as either a true filmmaker or a hack is riding heavily on his directorial debut of “Gone Baby Gone”.

Without fail, he falls easily into the category of true talent. Following the path that fellow actor-turned-director Clint Eastwood did with “Mystic River,” Affleck elevated a crime thriller by author Dennis Lehane to the big screen.
